Free Gulfstream Park Picks – Feb 25/26, 2012

Gulfstream Park

This weekend many eyes will be on Florida. There will be some questions that get answered one way or the other, and horseplayers will have a better glimpse of who goes on and who falls behind a bit. But, in the meantime we can buckle down and take our shot this weekend.

Gulfstream Park – Saturday

Race #8 – The Sabin Stakes (G3) – 1 1/16 miles – 3:49 p.m. ET

#3 Awesome Maria (8-5) looks to be the right now. I really like Royal Delta, but I think her next thoughts will focus in Dubai. John Velasquez in the irons for Mr. Pletcher, and they have 2 wins at GP. Been off for 8 months, and she ran big after a 10 month layoff in the past. Been working well at Palm Meadows, and exits off an impressive win in the Phipps. Drops back in class, and if Royal Delta needs a tune-up, this should be her race to lose.

Race #10 – The Very One Stakes (G3) – 1 3/8 miles on the turf – 4:45 p.m. ET

#6 Keertana (4-1) – Jose Lezcano up for Tom Proctor. They are 1/1 for GP, and they ran an even third at Tampa last out. If you look back last year, she won this race off the same prep coming in from Tampa. Lezcano wins 14% on the weeds.

Race #11 – The Davona Dale (G2) – 1 1/16 miles – 5:53 p.m. ET

#3 Captivating Lass (5-1) – Johnny V  in the saddle for Kiaran McLaughlin. Been off for 49 days, and has the vacation spot at Palm Meadows.

#4 The Cat’s All That (12-1) – Paco Lopez up today, and is 2/2 ITM at GP. Just missed last out, and been on a strong morning work tab.

#5 Frolic’s Revenge (8-1) – J.C. Leyva in the driver’s seat, and they make a turf-to-dirt move.  The barn wins 29% on this move.

Gulfstream Park – Sunday

Race #11 – The Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) – 1 1/16 miles – 5:13 p.m. ET

#7 Union Rags (2-1) – Julien Leparoux in the saddle for Michael Matz. The regular rider J.J. Castellano opts for Algorithms. Been off for three months after the green effort down the lane in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. There can be more learned from a tough beat than an easy win at times. Leparoux looks for roses this year, and Matz looks to return to Louisville. Been off at Palm Meadows, and the race should answer many questions on how the race will take shape.
