Winning Ponies / Free Selections / Saturday / 5-25-2013

Winning Ponies has been on a red-hot streak, and it is never too late to get in on the action. We are going to examine some spot plays from around the country as the racing is just starting to heat up for summer. Saddle up, and grab your E-Z Win Forms, and get ready for a great holiday weekend!

Churchill Downs

Partly cloudy with a high of 70 degrees.

Race #8 – O.C. $62,500 – 1 mile on the turf – 4:27 p.m. ET

#9 – Cozzetti (5-2) = Shaun Bridgmohan in the irons for trainer Dale Romans. This colt by Cozzene sports some very solid numbers in the field. He owns the field best 22.6 Turf Rating,  a 70 Last Race Rating, and a 67 Composite Rating. Add all of these factors up, and we have a colt coming back in good order. He shows a “Monster Workout” icon when he scorched a 1:01.2 over the Churchill turf, and sports the “Dropping in Class” note as well. He has been away from the races since last September, and that earns him the “Layoff of 180 Days +” symbol to remind us we have a rested runner coming back. The rider is on fire in Louisville, and turf runners can ready up for the races in a hurry. The drop in class is enough to make me jump, but the tandem of Romans and Bridgmohan is definitely a plus.

Woodbine

Sunny conditions with high of 59 degrees.

Race #7 – Alw $70,300 – 7f – 3:55 p.m. ET

#10 – Kitten Candy (9-2) = Tyler Pizzaro has the call for trainer Robert Tiller (27%). Second time off the layoff for this son of Candy Ride, and fits better into this level of competition. He shows the “Should Improve” and “Dropping in Class” icons to let us know where he stands. His Last Race Rating is a field best 58+, and his Composite Rating is also at the top with a 56. The two races where he faced Ontario-bred runners, he took on some very tough customers. The drop in class should suit him better, and he should be a mid-pace stalker in this affair.

Hollywood Park

Partly cloudy with a high of 70 degrees.

Race #3 – The (G-2) American Handicap – 1 mile on the turf – 5:04 p.m. ET

#2 – Obviously (4-5) = Joe Talamo is the pilot for trainer Mike Mitchell (25%). 2/2 ITM at Hollywood, and this is his second time off of the layoff. 4/4 ITM going this route of ground, and looks as tough as a nickel steak. He is a beaten favorite in his last race prep going 6 1/2, and Mitchell gets payback at a 26% winning clip. His Turf Rating is a field best 32, Last Race Rating of 61 +, and a Composite Rating of 66. Don’t forget that when the (+) symbol is found, an improved effort is coming his way. He owns the “Monster Workout” tab, and the “Should Improve” icon. The last race was a tightening of the screws in the (G-3) San Simeon, and he gets a “Moving up in Class” note to remind us of the level he faced last out. A speedy son of Choisir (AUS) who looks to be the major pace player in this field. Go back two races and he faced (HOY) Wise Dan in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and lead all the way around. I feel he likes the distance, and that last effort was to put a little gas into the tank. The “Monster Workout” on 5/17 gives me confidence, and Talamo fits this runner nicely.
