How much would you pay for the next day’s newspaper today? Kinda sounds like a Twilight Zone episode doesn’t it? What if we jumped ahead ten years? Here are some possible headlines:

Slots at all tracks are banned. This direct action will allow all ten of the “Super” tracks owned by Facebook, LLC  to focus their efforts on racing the way it was meant to be. It seems there was never enough money to be made, and racing has cut down to forty days per year from the previous fifty. I guess the good days are over for good according to Chelsea Schwarzenegger…..The game will just have to find a way to survive or fade.

The Breeders’ Cup is pleased to announce that every five years they will run this day of champions. It will be held at Philadelphia Park, and there will be a sprint championship held at Delta Downs. This three-day-event will be every five years, and we can look forward to these champions showcasing their ability.

D Wayne Lukas is the oldest trainer to win the Derby. Lukas, at 114 years old, has won the race 12 times. He won the first nine at old Churchill Downs, and the other three at Penn National. Lukas is looking good, and tend sto his runners daily. He is stabled at the once upon a time racetrack Pimlico, where he trains daily.

Since California has fallen into the Pacific, racing has done very well in Washington. The races carry the names of the historic tracks from Hollywood Park, Santa Anita, and Jerry Brown Downs…

O.K, now this may be a little far fetched. But some of it is already happening. We are losing tracks. The small ovals, due to VLT legislation, will trump the marquee tracks for purse structure.  When you see night racing at the Twin Spires, all bets are off… Who knows what time the race will run, and there are already rumors that the first leg of the Triple Crown could be held elsewhere.

Let’s just enjoy the races. Nothing lasts forever, and do what you can to support our sport. Let your legislators know how you feel, and sign every petition to keep this sport alive and well. I would hate to be right about the future in this post. It would break my heart to know that Philly Park could have the Derby someday because Kentucky could not get their act together…Boy, I sure hope I wake from this nightmare soon…
